Thai Basil Stir Fry
Thai food has become massively popular in the U.S. for good reason — it’s flavorful, nourishing, and incredibly satisfying. This stir fry is a great entry point if you’re new to Thai cooking, and an authentic favorite if you’re already a fan. The secret ingredient is Thai basil, which brings a vibrant, spicy flavor that regular basil just can’t replace. Paired with quality beef, crisp vegetables, and a savory sauce, this dish will quickly become a weeknight staple.
Ingredients
For the Stir Fry:
- 1–2 lbs steak of choice (partially frozen for easier slicing)

- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 1 Tbsp minced ginger
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 medium zucchini, diced
- ½ red bell pepper, diced

- ¼ cup soy sauce
- ½ cup oyster sauce
- 2 Tbsp cornstarch mixed in 1 cup warm water
- Jasmine rice (for serving)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Rice and Beef
- Start cooking jasmine rice so it’s ready to serve with the stir fry.
- Place thawed steak in the freezer for 15–20 minutes to firm up, then slice paper thin.
- Season beef lightly with salt and pepper and set aside.
2. Prep the Vegetables
- Dice zucchini, red bell pepper, and carrots into uniform 1-inch pieces.
- Mince garlic and ginger, then set aside.
3. Stir Fry the Vegetables
- Heat wok or skillet over high heat with 1–2 Tbsp oil.
- Sauté zucchini, bell pepper, and carrots for 3–4 minutes, tossing frequently.
- Remove vegetables and set aside.
4. Cook the Beef
- Add another tablespoon of oil to the skillet.
- Stir in garlic and ginger, cooking for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add beef strips and sear, stirring every 2–3 minutes for 8–10 minutes.
- Add onion and Thai basil, cooking until onion softens and basil becomes aromatic.
5. Build the Sauce
- Stir in soy sauce and oyster sauce, coating beef evenly.
- Add cornstarch slurry, bring to a boil, and cook 2–3 minutes until sauce thickens.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
6. Finish and Serve
- Return pre-cooked vegetables to the skillet and stir until heated through.
- For crisper vegetables, remove from heat immediately after mixing.
- Serve hot over fluffy jasmine rice.
