Thai Basil Stir Fry

Thai food has become massively popular in the U.S. for good reason — it’s flavorful, nourishing, and incredibly satisfying. This stir fry is a great entry point if you’re new to Thai cooking, and an authentic favorite if you’re already a fan. The secret ingredient is Thai basil, which brings a vibrant, spicy flavor that regular basil just can’t replace. Paired with quality beef, crisp vegetables, and a savory sauce, this dish will quickly become a weeknight staple.

Ingredients

For the Stir Fry:

  • 1–2 lbs steak of choice (partially frozen for easier slicing)
  • ¼ cup Thai basil leaves
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp minced ginger
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 medium zucchini, diced
  • ½ red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 cup carrots, diced
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup oyster sauce
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch mixed in 1 cup warm water
  • Jasmine rice (for serving)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Rice and Beef

  • Start cooking jasmine rice so it’s ready to serve with the stir fry.
  • Place thawed steak in the freezer for 15–20 minutes to firm up, then slice paper thin.
  • Season beef lightly with salt and pepper and set aside.

2. Prep the Vegetables

  • Dice zucchini, red bell pepper, and carrots into uniform 1-inch pieces.
  • Mince garlic and ginger, then set aside.

3. Stir Fry the Vegetables

  • Heat wok or skillet over high heat with 1–2 Tbsp oil.
  • Sauté zucchini, bell pepper, and carrots for 3–4 minutes, tossing frequently.
  • Remove vegetables and set aside.

4. Cook the Beef

  • Add another tablespoon of oil to the skillet.
  • Stir in garlic and ginger, cooking for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Add beef strips and sear, stirring every 2–3 minutes for 8–10 minutes.
  • Add onion and Thai basil, cooking until onion softens and basil becomes aromatic.

5. Build the Sauce

  • Stir in soy sauce and oyster sauce, coating beef evenly.
  • Add cornstarch slurry, bring to a boil, and cook 2–3 minutes until sauce thickens.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

6. Finish and Serve

  • Return pre-cooked vegetables to the skillet and stir until heated through.
  • For crisper vegetables, remove from heat immediately after mixing.
  • Serve hot over fluffy jasmine rice.
