FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Beef FAQ

Are you Certified Organic?

We are not certified organic. However we are 100% aware of what our cattle eat and how they are raised in order to produce an all-natural product. We raise what we feel 100% confident feeding our own family and pass the same quality and integrity on to our customers. The extra cost and red tape that it would take to get a ‘certified’ sticker simply isn’t worth the extra expense it would add on to your investment.

Has your beef been treated with antibiotics?

All the meat retailed at Folsom Farm Beef is 100% antibiotic free from the very beginning. Antibiotics are used in situations where an animal is diagnosed as being sick and is necessary for the well-being of the animal. However, animals that are administered antibiotics are flagged and never enter the meat program at Folsom Farm Beef. Animals therapeutically treated with antibiotics are perfected safe to eat after the standard meat withdrawal period, however we have chosen not to market this beef to our customers and they go a different direction within the operation.

Are hormones used in your meat production?

No growth hormones of any kind are ever used in the cattle on Folsom Farm.

Have you used or plan to use the mRNA vaccines?

No we are not using any mRNA vaccines in our cattle or ever plan to use them in the future. There are a lot of false statements circulating on the internet about mRNA vaccines in cattle, but there are actually no current mRNA vaccines licensed for use in cattle right now.

What breeds are your cattle?

We use a combination of Red Angus and Simmental to breed animals that marble and perform best in South East Idaho. Every animal that enters the meat program is conceived and raised 100% on our land.

Is your beef grass-fed?

Our cattle live on native pasture and locally sourced feed their entire lives. We didn’t start our farm with the intent of selling the beef. We were initially raising a quality, nutritious, great tasting product to feed our own family. As we decided to expand the operation to offer our beef to others, our practices have remained the same. We continue to raise all our cattle with the same high standards and integrity so you’re getting exactly what we feed our family.

Our cattle spend the first year of their life on their moms and openly grazing on our grass. We finish our cattle on a very specific balanced ration of hay, corn silage, Idaho spuds and flaked corn for their last 5 – 6 months to ensure consistent marbling, quality and flavor before harvesting.

Do you harvest humanely?

We do everything within our power to take the utmost care of our cattle in every stage of their lives including getting them to the processor for harvesting. Any stress prior to harvesting can affect the quality of the meat. The harvesting is done under USDA inspection and we strive to ensure that the animals experience as little stress as possible.

How do you select animals harvested for meat?

None of our breeding animals go into our meat program. Older animals don’t create as desirable of an end product. The cattle that enter the meat program to be finished will be harvested around 18 months of age. Roughly 20% of all female and male calves born on the farm will be kept as replacement breeding females and bulls. We do sell breeding bulls to the public as well so this requires us to keep more of the male calves for bull development. The replacement females will go to replace the older cows in the herd that are falling out of production.

Is your corn non-GMO?

We get it through Valley Wide from their mill in Preston, ID. The corn is such a small percentage in our cows finishing food ration and the research we’ve done about corn that was gmo vs. non did not prove to make a difference so it hasn’t been a priority to get non gmo.

Product FAQ

What makes your ground beef different from what people are used to?

Lots of ground beef bought in stores or at restaurants is from older cows and bulls that fell out of production and are slaughtered solely for ground beef so the quality is much lower and many times being made from multiple different cows.

The ground beef we sell comes from the trimmings of the same animals being raised and finished for the best marbled steaks. So the flavor and tenderness from dry aging adds to the rich beefy flavor of our ground beef.

What is the ancestral blend?

This was created to get the best nutrients in our bodies without having to choke it down😉! Gram for gram, beef liver is one of the most nutrient dense food there is on the planet. Most people don’t have a palate for eating organs like liver and heart. We are offering our ground beef ancestral blend so you can enjoy the benefits of the superfood nutrients AND actually enjoy your experience eating it! Our ancestral blend is our 85/15 premium ground beef plus 7% liver and 3% heart blended in. You’re welcome!

What is the fat ratio in your ground beef?

We shoot for an 85/15 ground beef to fat ration for optimal taste and consistency but this can vary slightly per animal.

Shopping FAQ

Can we shop your beef at the CHR Livestock Supply Farm Store?

If you are local to East Idaho or ever in the area, you are welcome to stop by our facility and pick up your meat and merchandise directly to save on shipping.

What is the most cost effective way to get your meat?

If you are somewhat local to Rexburg, Idaho and have the freezer space, buying in bulk (whole, ½ or ¼ cow) will always be the most cost effective way to get your beef. We realize that most people are not local to South East Idaho and many don’t have additional freezer space available to store that much beef at one time so that’s why we decided to offer beef boxes as well. The subscription boxes will save you a bit on monthly orders and you’ll earn extra Farm Store merch and goodies for being a loyal part of our Folsom Farm Family.

Where do you ship your meat?

We ship to all 50 states in the US as long as we can overnight ship to your zip code. There are select zip codes in Hawaii and Alaska where overnight shipping is not yet available.

What is the wait time if boxes sell out and bulk slots fill?

We are a family owned and operated small farm so availability is limited. We have 4 cows being harvested at the USDA processor every month so once that meat is sold, you’ll need to wait til the next month to try to secure a box. Our subscription boxes will always get first priority and then anything extra will be available for one time orders.

For local bulk orders, we have two cows available each month so once those are taken, unfortunately you’ll need to wait until the next year. You can secure your whole cow on our folsomfarmbeef.com store by selecting the whole cow and putting down your deposit. We’ll message you to schedule the month that is best for you. We will go over everything with you to customize all your cuts and preferences before the cow is harvested.
